Volcanoes emit much hydrogen sulfide gas, H₂S, which reacts with the oxygen in the air to form water and sulfur dioxide, SO₂. Every 80 tons of H₂S reacts with 113 tons of oxygen and forms 42 tons of water. How many tons of SO₂ are formed?

Answer:

151 tons of SO2

Step-by-step explanation:

Lets start with the reaction:

H2S + O2 = H2O + SO2

This is not balanced. This looks better:

2H2S + 3O2 → 2SO2 + 2H2O

tons: 80 113 X 42

The conservation of mass law tells us that we'll have the same weight on either side of the equation:

Reactants(tons) Products (tons)

80 + 113 = 193 X + 42

So we can write:

193 = X + 42

X = 151 tons of SO2
