the 'and' in a number represents where the decimal place is.

The first part before the decimal point has five hundred then six. so you add them. 500+6=506

Then, after the decimal you have to find the thousandths place. The first place after the decimal is tenths, so leave that a 0. The second place after the decimal is the hundredths place, so leave that a for now too. Then the third place after the decimal is the thousandths place so you put 2 there. But what about the 90 you say? Well, 9 100ths is equal to 90 1000ths. So you put the 9 in the hundredths place.
