The central hall of a school is 22m long and 15.5 m wide. A

carpet is to be laid on the floor leaving a strip of 75 cm width
from the walls uncovered. Find the area of the carpet and
the area of the strip left uncovered.

Answer:

Area of carpet:

(22 - 2(.75))(15.5 - 2(.75))

= (22 - 1.5)(15.5 - 1.5) = 20.5(14) = 287 m²

Area of strip left uncovered:

22(15.5) - 287 = 341 - 287 = 54 m²
