He became the Shah of Iran in early 1581 in a revolt against his father, Mohammad of Safavid, who was imprisoned. Amid general anarchy in Persia, he was proclaimed ruler of Khorasan in 1581 and obtained possession of the Persian throne in July 1589.
He came to power in 1588 and he strengthened the Safavid dynasty by expelling Ottoman and Uzbek troops from Persian soil and by creating a standing army.
Both the military and civilian life were reformed by Shah Abbas. He curtailed the military's power and formed two new armies dedicated solely to him. Abbas reformed his administration as well. He harshly punished corruption and promoted only those officials who had shown integrity and loyalty.
