One of the outcomes of the Mount Vernon Compact was that it inspired the idea of regular meetings between states to discuss matters of common interest, which eventually led to the Constitutional Convention of 1787. The Mount Vernon Compact was an agreement between Virginia and Maryland on how to regulate the navigation and commerce on the shared waterways of the Potomac River, the Pocomoke River, and the Chesapeake Bay. The Mount Vernon Compact also demonstrated George Washington's leadership and influence in the post-revolutionary period. Washington, who hosted the conference at his estate, was not an official delegate but played a key role in facilitating the discussions and resolving the disputes. Washington's involvement in the Mount Vernon Conference increased his reputation as a statesman and a peacemaker, and he was later persuaded to attend and preside over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, where he helped shape the new federal government.
