well, the value was actually "x", which oddly enough is the 100%, but we also know that £88 is 16% of that, so

\begin{array}{ccll} \stackrel{ \pounds }{Amount}&\%\\ \cline{1-2} x & 100\\ 88& 16 \end{array} \implies \cfrac{x}{88}~~=~~\cfrac{100}{16} \\\\\\ \cfrac{x}{88} ~~=~~ \cfrac{25}{4} \implies 4x=(88)(25)\implies x=\cfrac{(88)(25)}{4}\implies x=\stackrel{ \pounds }{550}

Answer:

£ 550

Explanation:

Let the value be x.

To find the value when 16% of it is £ 88, we can set up the following equation:

16% of x = £ 88

0.16 × x = £ 88

0.16x = £ 88

Divide both sides by 0.16.

\sf (0.16x )/(0.16)= (£88 )/( 0.16 )

x = £ 550

So, the value is £ 550.
