The sum of two numbers is 3 more than four times the first number. The first number is 10 less than three times the second number. Find the two numbers.​

Explanation:

let the two numbers be x and y

as per given:

x + y = 3 + 4x (1)

x = 3y - 10 (2)

from equation (1)

x - 4x = 3 - y

-3x = 3 - y (3)

substituting value of x from equation (2) into equation (3)

-3(3y - 10) = 3 - y

-9y + 30 = 3 - y

-9y + y = 3 - 30

-8y = -27

y = 27/8

by substituting value of y in equation (2)

x = 3(27/8) - 10

= 81/8 - 10

= 81 - 80 / 8 = 1/8

thus, the two numbers are:

1/8 and 27/8
