I think Christopher Columbus believed he had sailed to Asia since many Europeans at the time believed in the concept of a "round earth" and were unaware of the presence of the Americas. Columbus wanted to locate a western path to Asia, and when he arrived in the Caribbean, he thought he had arrived on the eastern coast of Asia. Explorers did not understand they had discovered a new continent until much later.
