For each of the four arguments below, you should list the sentence numbers that correspond to premises, conclusions, and any subconclusions you can detect. With these three categories in mind, each of the four arguments will have the following structure to the answer. Each category should be followed by the number of any sentence you see that fits the category (do not type out the whole sentence or even part of it!). Tip: One of these arguments must have a subconclusion; the others can be read and diagrammed as having subconclusions. (4 pts. Each) 1. Premises 2. Subconclusion (if no subconclusion, leave this blank) 3.Conclusion 1) [1] The famous trial lawyer Clarence Darrow made a name for himself by using the "determinism defense" to get his clients acquitted of serious crimes. [2] The crux of this approach is the idea that humans are not really responsible for anything they do because [3] they cannot choose freely—they are "determined" by nature (or God) to be the way they are. [4] So in a sense, Darrow says, humans are like wind-up toys with no control over any action or decision. [5] They have no free will. [6] Remember that Darrow was a renowned agnostic who was skeptical of all religious claims. [7] But Darrow is wrong about human free will for two reasons. [8] First, in our moral life, our own commonsense experience suggests that sometimes people are free to make moral decisions. [9] We should not abandon what our commonsense experience tells us without good reason, and Darrow has given us no good reason. [10] Second, Darrow’s determinism is not confirmed by science, as he claims, but actually conflicts with science. 2) [1] There is no question in my mind: Colonel Mustard is the murderer, because [2] if he did, he would probably have blood stains on the sleeve of his shirt. [3] The blood stains are tiny, but they are there. [4] Any observant person could see them. [5] Also, the murder weapon was within the colonel’s reach for quite a while before the crime was committed. And since [6] of all of the people in the house at the time, he alone does not have an airtight alibi, [7] he must be the killer. 3) [1] Now, as soon as landowners are deprived of their strong sentimental attachment to the land, based on memories and pride, it is certain that sooner or later they will sell it, for [2] they have a powerful pecuniary interest in doing so, since [3] other forms of investment earn a higher rate of interest and [4] liquid assets are more easily used to satisfy the passions of the moment. 4) [1] The idea of increased longevity is largely a myth. [2] People are not generally living longer. [3] There are just more people getting old. [4] Eighty percent of the increase in life expectancy in the United States is due to the elimination of widespread infant mortality.
