A green garden hose is 5 times longer than brown. The black hose is 6 ft. shorter than the green. If the total length of all three hoses is 159 ft., what is the length of the black hose?

Explanation:

Add all of them (in terms of 'b')

b +6 = g

g = 5* br or br = 1/5 g = 1/5 ( b+6)

b

Add them all together...and solve for 'b'

b+6 + 1/5 ( b+6) + b = 159

b + 1/5 b + b + 6 + 6/5 = 159

b = 69 ft and g = 75 ft and br = 15 ft
