The total amount of gravel delivered to the site over the two days is 69/4 or 17 and 1/4 tons.

In order to arrive at this answer do the following:
First, convert the mixed number fractions into improper fractions—multiply the denominator by the whole number and add the product to the numerator then place your sum over the denominator.

7(1)/(2) = ((2 *7) + 1) = (15)/(2)

9(3)/(4) =((9*4)+3)= (39)/(4)

Next, give the two fractions a common denominator. In order to do so, multiply the numerator and denominator of
(15)/(2) by 2. This gives the fractions a common denominator of 4, allowing you to add the fractions together.

(15)/(2) * (2)/(2) = (30)/(4)
Add the fractions.

(30)/(4) + (39)/(4) = (69)/(4)

If you want to convert this improper fraction into a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator. The remainder will be the numerator. The denominator will stay the same.

\sqrt[4]{69} = 17 with a remainder of one. Which becomes:

17(1)/(4)
