Cecily is comparing two checking accounts. Checking account A has a monthly fee of $16 and a per-

check fee of $0.08,
while checking account B has a monthly fee of $14 and a per-check fee of $0.12.
How many checks would Cecily need to write per month for the accounts to charge the same amount in
fees?

Answer: 50

Work Shown

0.08x + 16 = 0.12x + 14

0.08x-0.12x = 14-16

-0.04x = -2

x = -2/(-0.04)

x = 50

Cecily needs to write 50 checks for both checking account plans to cost the same.

Account A = 0.08x+16 = 0.08*50+16 = $20

Account B = 0.12x+14 = 0.12*50+14 = $20

Both accounts would cost $20 each when she writes 50 checks per month.

If she writes more than 50 checks, then account A is the cheaper plan. Otherwise, account B is the better option.
