as I said, a "dilation" greater than 1 is really a "blow up" and less than 1 is a "reduction".

now, let's notice this one, the dashed one is the smaller, so the solid one is the larger, so is "reduction", thus the scale factor is less than 1, hmm how much?

well, we can pick any point in the line, for the sake of simplicity, let's pick the right-hand-side edge, say the part the vertical line is touching the x-axis, so that'd be at (6 , 0) on the dashed line, the reduced image it shows at (2 , 0), so


\left( (1)/(3) \right)(6)\implies 2\hspace{5em}\left( (1)/(3) \right)(0)\implies 0\hspace{5em}\stackrel{scale factor}{(1)/(3)}
