Let the number of children be C

Let the number of adults be A

Translating the word problem into an algebraic equation, we have;

A + C = 738 .......equation 1

1.5C + 2C = 1306 .......equation 2

A = 738 - C .......equation 3

Substituting eqn 3 into eqn 2, we have;

1.5(738 - C) + 2C = 1306

1107 - 1.5C + 2C = 1306

1306 - 1107 = 2C - 1.5C

199 = 0.5C

C = 199/0.5

C = 398 children.

Now, to find the value of A.

From equation 3;

A = 738 - C

A = 738 - 398

A = 340 adult.
