= area of 'outer triangle' - area of rectangle

area of triangle =
(1)/(2) bh ( b is the base and h the height )

here b = 8x + 2 and h = 6x , then

area of triangle =
(1)/(2) × 6x(8x + 2) = 3x(8x + 2) = 24x² + 6x

area of rectangle = bh ( b is the base and h the height )

here b = 3x + 1 and h = x , then

area of rectangle = x(3x + 1) = 3x² + x

Then

area of shaded part = 24x² + 6x - (3x² + x)

= 24x² + 6x - 3x² - x ( collect like terms )

= 21x² + 5x
