Before Confederation, the colonies of British North America (BNA) were governed through a system known as colonial governance. Each colony had its own government, led by a governor appointed by the British Crown. The governor had significant powers and was responsible for making decisions on behalf of the colony. The colonies also had elected assemblies, where representatives were chosen by the people to discuss and pass laws. However, the ultimate authority still rested with the British government.
