the area (A) of a rectangle is calculated as

A = length × width

let width be w , then length = 3w ( three times as long as width )

substitute into formula for A

A = 3w × w = 3w²

given A = 218,700 , then

3w² = 218,700 ( divide both sides by 3 )


(3)/(3) w² =
(218,700)/(3) , that is

w² = 72,900 ( take square root of both sides )


√(w^2) =
√(72,900) , then

w = 270

the width of the pasture w = 270 ft
