when a number is multiplied by 2 or more values in a bracket, the number must be multiplied by each value in the bracket. the 5(3k-12) is therefore 15k-60 and the -8(2+5k) is -16-40k. you now have 15k-60-16-40k. Simplified, 15k-40k=-25k and -60-16=-76. The final value is -25k-76. Therefore the number being multiplied with k is -25.
