Answer:

x = 8, y = 5

Explanation:

given the system of equations

- 6x + 5y = - 23 → (1) both sides by - 16 )

2x - 7y = - 19 → (2)

multiplying (2) by 3 and adding the result to (1) will eliminate x

6x - 21y = - 57 → (3)

add (1) and (3) term by term to eliminate x

(- 6x + 6x) + (5y - 21y) = - 23 - 57

0 - 16y = - 80

- 16y = - 80 ( divide both sides by - 16 )

y = 5

substitute y = 5 into either of the 2 original equations and solve for x

substituting into (1)

- 6x + 5(5) = - 23

- 6x + 25 = - 23 ( subtract 25 from both sides )

- 6x = - 48 ( divide both sides by - 6 )

x = 8

solution is x = 8 , y = 5
