Explain the difference between longitudinal and transverse waves in terms of particle vibration

If a particle vibrates perpendicular to the direction of motion of the wave, then the wave is referred to as a transverse wave. But, if a particle vibrates parallel to the direction of motion of the wave, the wave is referred to as a longitudinal wave.
