first pick two numbers which add up to make +2 and by multiplying those two numbers they should be able to create -8.

so for example 4 and 2

4-2=2

4 x -2= -8

so now factorise:

d^2 +2d-8=0

d^2+4d-2d -8=0

d(d+4)-2(d+4)=0

d+4=0 d-2=0

d=-4 d=2
