A humpback whale swam south at one-third of its maximum speed for 7 minutes. If the whale could swim at a maximum speed of 180 metersperminute, how far did the whale swim in that time?

Explanation:

with a speed of 180 meters/minute it literally swims 180 meters every minute.

1/3 if this speed is

180/3 meters/minute = 60 meters/minute

so, that means, with 1/3 of its maximum speed it swims 60 meters every minute.

now, it swam for 7 minutes with that speed.

so, it was going 7 times the distance it would go in one minute.

that is

7 × 60 = 420 meters
