An archer shoots an arrow horizontally at a target 15m away. The arrow is aimed directly at the center of the target, but it hits 58cm lower. What was the initial speed of the arrow?

Answer:

S = 1/2 g t^2 distance arrow falls in time t

t = (2 S / g)^1/2 = (2 * .58 / 9.80)^1/2 = .344

It takes .34 sec for the arrow to reach the target

V = D / t = 15 / .34 = 43.6 m/sec
