A common explanation is that gene is the “basic unit of heredity” which is kind of a useless definition.

A chromosome is a condensed (tightly packed) amount of DNA. A gene is a region of DNA that codes for a protein. These proteins determines your traits.

When a gene is active the protein is transcribed through the the central dogma (dna —> rna —> protein) that protein acts in a signaling pathway that will lead to a specific trait.
