Explanation:

Since both terms have (x + 1), you are able to add the 3(x + 1) and 4(x + 1) to get 7(x + 1). (You can think about the x + 1 as the variable y, so then 3y + 4y would equal 7y.)

This would give you 7(x + 1) = 49

divide by 7 on both sides

x + 1 = 7

x = 6
