16(1) - 12 - 24(1) + 4 = -16. Now let's see if any of the other expressions would ALSO equal -16 if x = 1.

4 + 16(1) - 12(1 + 2(1)) = 6

40(1) - 16 = 24

16(1) - 24(1) - 4 + 12 = 0

-8(1) - 8 = -16

Therefore, -8x - 8 is the only equivalent expression :)
