Ulysses name means "Wrathful." And Wrathful means full of or characterized by intense anger. One way it affected him is that pride and anger cause him to taunt Polyphemus. He cared because Polyphemus killed and insulted his men. Due to Odysseus' taunting and tricking Polyphemus, he brings on the continued wrath of Poseidon.
