We want to subtract 1 1/2 from 4 3/4. Do this by multiplying the fraction 1/2 by 2 to get the same denominator in both fractions. 1 1/2 becomes 1 2/4. Then, you can subtract 4 3/4 - 1 2/4. 4-1 is 3 and 3/4 - 2/4 is 1/4. The answer is 3 1/4 miles.
