Factor the trinomial

y^2+5y-24

by the box method.

The multiplication gives -24y^2. Now we need to find two factor that gives 5x. It should be creal that this factor are 8y and -3y. Then:

Now we find the common factor for each column and row:

Therefore:

y^2+5y-24=(y-3)(y+8)
