During the Beginning of the 1900’s nationalism became ana very widespread ideology across the European continent. Basically the belief that a nation and its people are should always come first. This placed a lot of strain on the political relationships of multi-ethnic nations and empires, especially the Austro-Hungarian empire. The Archduke was traveling to inspect the Austro-Hungarian forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This angered Serbians who thought that Bosnia and Herzegovina should belong to the Serbs, and a group of young Nationalist decided that the best course of action was to assassinate the Archduke.
