Earthquakes occur along large cracks (faults) at or near the boundary between two tectonic plates. Why do some faults generate earthquakes while others move peacefully?

Some faults generate earthquakes while others move peacefully because the friction between the tectonic plates that are moving past each other generates stress that builds up in the rocks along the fault. If the stress builds up enough to overcome the friction, the rocks suddenly break and shift, causing an earthquake. In contrast, faults that do not generate earthquakes may have less friction, or the movement of the plates may not generate enough stress to cause the rocks to break and shift suddenly.
