Code switching is essentially the phenomenon of alternating between two or more language or language varieties.

When a speaker switches back and forth between two or more languages, or language varieties, during a same conversation or circumstance, it is known as code-switching or language alternation in linguistics. In contrast to plurilingualism, which refers to a person's capacity to speak numerous languages, code-switching is the practice of speaking multiple languages simultaneously.
