Let X represent number of pencils Ali has

And 2X for Melvin

And 4X for Zachary

Since X is 3, Melvin has 2(3) pencils
Which is = 6 pencils

Zachary has 4(3) pencils
Which is 12 pencils

Therefore; total pencils = 3+6+12
= 21 pencils in total

Answer:

\huge\boxed{\sf 21 \ pencils}

Explanation:

Ali has 3 pencils.

Melvin:

Melvin has twice.

So,

Melvin pencils = 2 × 3

= 6 pencils

Zachary:

Zachary has four times as many pencils as Ali.

So,

Zachary' pencils:

= 4 × 3

= 12 pencils

So:

Total pencils:

= 3 + 6 + 12

= 21 pencils

\rule[225]{225}{2}
