Cultural competence. Lucy, a medical assistant, just started her first day on the job. She confides in Mark, a medical coder, that she doesn't like working with team members of diverse backgrounds. Mark feels uncomfortable when he realizes she chose to confide in him because he and she are of the same ethnic background. Mark doesn't believe Lucy has done anything wrong since she was sharing only her opinion. Even so, Mark discusses the situation with his manager but leaves out Lucy's name, and recommends cultural competence and team work training. His manager agrees with the suggestion.
