The Heimlich maneuver and CPR are both life-saving techniques used in emergency situations where a person is choking or not breathing. Here are the basic steps for performing each technique:
Heimlich Maneuver:
Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around their waist.
Make a fist with one hand and place it just above the person's belly button.
Grasp your fist with your other hand and give quick upward thrusts into the person's abdomen until the object is dislodged or they begin to cough.
If the person becomes unconscious while you are performing the Heimlich maneuver, you should immediately begin CPR.
CPR:
Check for responsiveness by tapping the person's shoulder and asking loudly, "Are you okay?"
If they don't respond, call for emergency medical services (EMS) and begin chest compressions.
Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person's chest and interlock your other hand on top.
Press down hard and fast, about 2 inches deep and at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
If you are trained in CPR, give rescue breaths after every 30 compressions. If you are not trained or uncomfortable giving rescue breaths, continue chest compressions until EMS arrives.
It's important to note that these techniques should only be performed by someone who has been properly trained in them. If you are unsure of what to do in an emergency situation, call 911 or your local emergency medical services and follow their instructions.
