A small submarine starts at –1,260 feet in relation to sea level. Then it descends 5 feet per minute for 12 minutes.

What expression represents the new position of the submarine in relation to sea level?

Answer:

We know it's at -1260 feet and descends 5 per minute

The expression of this would be: -1260 - 5x, where x would be the time in minutes, as from -1260 feets it descends 5 per min.

Then, if we need to calculate it when it passes 12 minutes, we can replace the x by 12, and get the distance it would be

-1260 -5*12 = -1320 feet

And the answer would be -1320 feets
