In the two decades after removal the Five Tribes formed active economies and adapted to life in Indian Territory. The Chickasaw and Choctaw practiced cotton plantation agriculture, while the Cherokee, Creek, and Seminole engaged in subsistence farming, ranching, and cattle raising.
