Amir got $100 for his birthday. He wants to buy a pitching machine that costs $44 and as many baseballs as he can with the money. The baseballs cost $1.25 each. Amir found a coupon for 20% off the baseballs at the sporting goods store but he isn't sure if the coupon is expired. Determine the number of baseballs he can buy if he can use the coupon, and how many he can buy if he can't use the coupon.

Answer:

Without coupon: 44 baseballs

With coupon: 56 baseballs

Explanation:

  • Amount that Amir got as a birthday present = $100
  • Cost of pitching machine = $44
  • Amount left over for buying baseballs = 100 - 44 = $56
  • Cost of each baseball without coupon = $1.25
  • Number of baseballs that Amir can buy at $1.25 per baseball
    = 56/1.25 = 44.8.
Since you cannot buy a fraction of a baseball, round this down to 44
  • If the coupon works, the cost per baseball is reduced by 20%
  • 20% = 20/100 = 0.2 in decimal
  • Discount in $ at 20% discount = 1.25 x 0.2 = $0.25
  • Cost after discount = $1.25 - $0.25 = $1
  • Therefore number of baseballs that can be bought with coupon
    = 56/1 = 56
