For most enslaved African Americans in the 1800s, those who toiled hard all of their lives were treated well when they became old and could no longer work. it was possible to learn a trade, hire themselves out, and make enough money to eventually buy their freedom. food was dispensed on a weekly basis, and although it wasn’t much, it was healthy and nutritious. clothing was handed out once a year and was given only to those who could continue to work.
