I think Hamlet asks horatio to tell his story because he was alongside hamlet for most of the play and knows most of the details of his tragedy. Horatio is Hamlet's bestfriend so he knows him in depth. Horatio can portray hamlet's story better than anyone because of how well he knows him.

Horatio's role differs from other characters in the play because Horatio never betrayed Hamlet, which almost every other character did. For example, when Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were spying on Hamlet, Horatio was never asked to do such a thing to Hamlet. l feel that the audience knows if he was ever to be asked to spy, he wouldn't do it.
