I am writing an essay and Im wondering if this is the right way to use a semicolon. I know I heard somewhere that this is one of the ways to use a semicolon

There are always going to be certain situations where the government need to step in, as technology develops, there will need to be new laws; in different situations, new freedoms; in certain events, new restrictions.

Answer: Yes, your use of the semicolon in the sentence is correct. A semicolon is often used to separate two independent clauses that are closely related in meaning and are not joined by a coordinating conjunction.

In your sentence, the semicolon separates three related independent clauses that express the idea that as technology develops, the government will need to create new laws, freedoms, and restrictions. Using a semicolon instead of a period or a conjunction helps to emphasize the connection between the clauses and convey a sense of continuity and balance in the sentence.
