Explain the significance of the title of the story. What does it mean and how is it ironic for readers at the end?

Hemingway's title indicates that without courage a man is less than a man. In that “short” period preceding Macomber's death, he has behaved courageously and become a man. Therefore, he is “happy.” Wilson, however, categorizes Francis as a soft, great American boy-man.
