Two passengers leave the airport at Kansas City, Missouri. One flies to Los Angeles, California, in 4.1 hr and the other flies in the opposite direction to New York

City in 4.4 hr. With prevailing westerly winds, the speed of the plane to New York City is 50 mph faster than the speed of the plane to Los Angeles. If the total
distance traveled by both planes is 2464 mi, determine the average speed of each plane.

Explanation:

speed = distance/time

distance = speed × time

time = distance/speed

x = speed to LA

speed to NY = x + 50

4.1×x + 4.4×(x + 50) = 2464

4.1x + 4.4x + 220 = 2464

8.5x = 2244

x = 264 mph = speed to LA

speed to NY = 264 + 50 = 314 mph
