In 1990 an egg cost 2c less than in 1991. In 1992 an egg cost 4c more than in 1991. The cost of 11 eggs in 1990 was the same as the cost of 8 eggs in 1992. Find the cost of an egg in 1991. (Hint: let the 1991 cost of an egg be n cents. Express the 1990 and 1992 costs in terms of n. ​

Explanation:

Let the cost of one egg in 1990 be n cents, then in 1991, the cost of one egg will be; (n+2) cents (as the cost of one egg increases by 2 cents. In 1992, the cost of

one egg will be; (n+6) cents [from (n+2)+4].

Therefore from the question, the cost of 11 eggs in 1990 is equal to the sum of 8 eggs in 1992.

Mathematically,

11n=8(n+6)

11n=8n+48

11n-8n=48

3n=48

n=16 cents

In 1991, the cost of 1 egg was n+2, therefore by substitution the price of one egg then was 16+2=18 cents
