Starting from a pillar, you run a distance 200 m east (the +x -direction) at an average speed of 5.0 m/s , and then run a distance 280 m west at an average speed of 4.0 m/s to a post. Calculate your average speed from pillar to post.

Answer:

V1 = 5 m/s

t1 = 200 m / 5 m/s = 40 s

Likewise t2 = 70 s

S = 200 m + 280 m = 480 m

T = t1 + t2 = 110 s

Vav = 480 m / 110 s = 4.36 m/s
