The numbers 1 through 52 are written on individual cards and

placed face down. If you draw one of the cards, what is the probability
that it will have a number less than 13 on it? Explain how you arrived at
your answer.

If we have a collection of 52 possible numbers, and 1 is to be selected, we know that each number has a 1 in 52 chance of being picked.

Therefore, our denominator for a fraction would be:

x/52.

Seeing as the question asks the probability of the number 13 being selected, we’d simply use the number 13 as the numerator for the fraction.

13/52

We can then divide 13 by 52, to give us 0.25 (1/4)

The probability of drawing a card with the number 13 is 0.25 or 1:4 or 25%.
