Excerpt from George Kennan's Long Telegram, 1946

"In foreign countries Communists will, as a rule, work toward destruction of all forms of personal independence - economic, political, or moral. Their System can handle only individuals who have been brought into complete dependence on higher power.
In general, all Soviet efforts on unofficial international plane will be negative and destructive in character, designed to tear down sources of strength beyond reach of Soviet control. This is only in line with basic Soviet instinct that there can be no compromise with rival power and that constructive work can start only when Communist power is dominant.
Much depends on health and vigor of our own society. World communism is like malignant parasite which feeds only on diseased tissue."

Which of the following historical developments could be used to counter Kennan's claims about Soviet aggression during the Cold War?

A.) The actions of the CIA in Iran and Guatemala.
B.) The Soviet development of the atomic bomb in 1949.
C.) Winston Churchill's 'Iron Curtain' Speech.
D.) The Soviet suppression of democracy in Poland and East Germany.

Answer: D.) The Soviet suppression of democracy in Poland and East Germany!

Step-by-step explanation:

D.) The Soviet suppression of democracy in Poland and East Germany. This was an example of Soviet aggression during the Cold War, and it was an example of the Soviet Union's desire to expand its control and influence. By showing that the Soviet Union was willing to suppress democracy in its own satellite states, it demonstrated that Kennan's claims about Soviet aggression were true and that the Cold War was indeed a struggle between two competing power blocs.
