In December 1914, German and British troops called a temporary halt to World War I to celebrate Christmas. Soldiers from both sides shared food, sang carols, and exchanged small gifts. The men played soccer (football), creating one of the most memorable moments of the war. Then, the men returned to their trenches and resumed the war. By the end of the war, 9-11 million military personnel were killed, and 6-13 million civilians died as a direct result of the war.

What insights does the Christmas Truce give you about war?

I believe that it proves that if people look at war from each others points of view they will find enough common ground, that they don’t have to go to the same measures they did before. Both sides are blinded by there own problems and not thinking of each others. For example the nostalgia was enough for the soldiers to make a truce during Christmas it gave enough reason for both sides to get along.
