The Cherokee adopted many of the white traditions of the time, such as the use of the English language, the adoption of Christianity, and the adoption of a written constitution. They also adopted a system of representative government, modeled after the United States government, and established a system of courts and laws. The Cherokee also adopted the practice of owning slaves, although this was not a common practice among the Cherokee.
