The skeletal system is made up of bones, cartilage, and ligaments. Its functions include providing support for the body, protecting internal organs, and enabling movement. Bone marrow within the bones also produces blood cells.
One imbalance or disease of the skeletal system is osteoporosis, which is a condition where bones become weak and brittle. This can result in fractures and other injuries even from minor falls or bumps.
Osteoporosis can be treated with medication, calcium and vitamin D supplements, and lifestyle changes such as exercise and a healthy diet. While the damage already done cannot be reversed, treatment can slow down or prevent further bone loss and fractures.
